O55: FOSTERING A CULTURE OF INNOVATION IN MEDICAL STUDENTS AS FUTURE SURGEONS

Abstract Introduction In recent years, new technologies and rising costs in the NHS have created a thirst for innovation, particularly surgical specialties. Centres medical education are being encouraged to cultivate enterprise innovative thinking among their students. A one-day educational conference was organised by student-led society introduce students technological advancements surgery underline scope innovation within NHS. Method The included: three keynote speeches, skills workshops (basic advanced suturing, plastics general surgery-oriented skills), 3D-printing demonstration, minimally-invasive simulation, virtual reality interaction an ‘hack-a-thon’ addressing unmet need surgery. An online questionnaire comprising Likert-scale free-text responses circulated all attendees. Result 72 delegates attended 63 completed feedback forms (87.5%). As consequence of attending conference, participants reported increase interest careers (4.40-4.68, p <0.001), inspiration innovate (3.77-4.21, ability (3.69-4.06, <0.001) before after attending. Furthermore, 89% saw more as result conference. Finances cultural attitudes resisting change were identified major barriers innovation; necessity (cost-cutting, improving patient outcomes quality life) primary driver.
